Chapter 2 - The Black FleetTwo minutes and forty-five seconds later, the street transformed into a nightmare.

Three massive, heavily armored black SUVs screeched to a halt in front of the station.

They blocked both lanes of traffic entirely, ignoring the blaring horns of stranded cars.

The doors opened simultaneously.

Six men in tailored black suits stepped out into the pouring rain.

They did not carry umbrellas.

They carried themselves with the lethal grace of seasoned predators.

Clara stood up, instinctively pushing Julian behind her legs to shield him.

The crowd of commuters instantly scattered, sensing the overwhelming danger radiating from the vehicles.

From the middle SUV, a man emerged who made the entire city seem to hold its breath.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in a dark, flawless three-piece suit.

His eyes were the exact same striking, icy-blue as the little boy hiding behind Clara.

“Daddy!” Julian cried out, rushing past Clara’s legs.

The man dropped to his knees right there on the wet, filthy pavement.

He caught the boy in his arms, burying his face in his son's wet curls.

For a split second, Clara saw a flash of raw, desperate humanity in the man's expression.

Then, he stood up, and the emotion vanished behind an impenetrable mask of pure ice.

He looked at Clara, his gaze sweeping over her cheap coat and exhausted face.

“Get in the car,” he ordered, his voice leaving absolutely no room for debate.

“Excuse me?” Clara gasped, taking a step backward.

“I said, get in the car, Miss Miller,” he repeated coldly.

“You have seen my son, and you have seen my face.”

“That means you are no longer safe on this street.”

Before Clara could run, two massive guards flanked her sides.

She was forced into the back of the leather-scented SUV, trapped in a world she didn't understand.
