Chapter 15 - The AmbushThe fake engagement successfully bought Dante the time he needed to hunt.

He left the estate the next morning, taking twenty of his best men with him.

Clara was left alone with Julian, pacing the halls with a terrible sense of dread.

She couldn't shake the feeling that something was horribly wrong.

Around noon, Mrs. Gable, the severe nanny, brought Clara a cup of tea in the conservatory.

“Drink this, Miss Miller to calm your nerves,” the older woman insisted, her eyes avoiding Clara’s.

Clara took a sip, but the tea tasted incredibly bitter.

Her medical training flared, and she immediately spat the liquid back into the cup.

“What did you put in this?!” Clara demanded, standing up quickly.

But the small amount she had swallowed was already pulling her down into darkness.

Her vision blurred, and the floor rushed up to meet her.

When Clara woke up, her wrists were bound tightly to a wooden chair with zip ties.

She was in a damp, freezing warehouse that smelled of rust and saltwater.

Marcus, the traitorous underboss, stood in front of her with a cruel, triumphant smile.

“Sleeping Beauty is finally awake,” Marcus sneered, tapping a combat knife against his thigh.

“Where is Dante?” Clara rasped, her head pounding violently from the drugs.

“Dante is currently raiding an empty warehouse on the other side of the city.”

Marcus walked behind her, grabbing a fistful of her hair and pulling her head back.

“Mrs. Gable was very expensive to buy, but handing you over was worth every penny.”

“When Dante realizes his precious fiancée is gone, he will surrender his entire empire to get you back.”

Clara refused to cry, channeling every ounce of defiance she possessed.

“Dante is going to tear you apart,” she whispered fiercely.
