Chapter 8 - The Siege BeginsThe first muffled sounds of gunfire echoed up through the elevator shafts, a distant, rhythmic popping that sent chills down Elise’s spine.

The syndicate war had officially begun, and it was happening right beneath their feet.
Julian stood by the reinforced medical doors, watching the live security feeds on a wall-mounted tablet.
His face was carved from granite as he watched dozens of masked mercenaries flood his luxurious lobby, trading heavy fire with his loyal guards.
“They have numbers, but we have the high ground and the reinforced choke points,” Julian muttered to himself, analyzing the tactical situation.
Elise winced, squeezing the bedsheets as another contraction hit her, this one noticeably stronger and longer than the last.
“Dr. Aris,” she groaned, unable to hide the pain in her voice.
The doctor rushed to her side, checking her pulse and gently examining her abdomen.
“The stress is accelerating the process,” Dr. Aris warned, looking nervously toward Julian.
“The contractions are becoming regular; she is going into active, premature labor.”
Julian cursed violently in Italian, stepping away from the monitors and rushing back to her bedside.
He rested his heavy rifle against the wall and took her hand again, his thumb rubbing soothing circles into her pale skin.
“You need to breathe, Elise,” he instructed gently, masking his own panic for her sake.
“I can’t have this baby here, Julian, it’s too early,” she cried, panic lacing every word.
“The baby will be fine,” Dr. Aris assured her, though his hands were trembling slightly as he prepared an IV line.
“I have neonatal equipment here, just in case of emergencies.”
A massive explosion shook the building, causing the overhead surgical lights to flicker ominously before the backup generators kicked in.
“They blew the security gates on the thirtieth floor,” Marcus’s voice crackled harshly over the intercom.
“They are pushing up the central stairwell, Boss.”
“Hold the line at the fortieth,” Julian commanded into his radio, his voice echoing with ruthless authority.
“Use the incendiary charges if they breach the fire doors.”

He looked down at Elise, his expression softening instantly as he wiped a bead of sweat from her forehead.
“I am right here,” he promised her.
