Chapter 2 - The Standoff“I came here to sign the divorce papers, Julian,” Elise said, staring stubbornly at the knot of his silk tie.

“I want the settlement, I want my maiden name restored, and I want to walk out of this building today.”

Julian’s eyes darkened, a storm of fury and betrayal brewing in the silver depths as he registered the finality in her tone.

“You are not walking out of this building,” he promised, his tone carrying the weight of an absolute, unbreakable vow.

“You cannot hold me hostage,” she snapped, her maternal instincts overriding her fear of the dangerous syndicate boss standing over her.

“I am Julian Sterling,” he reminded her coldly.

“I can do whatever the hell I want, and right now, what I want is an explanation for why you stole my child from me.”

The accusation hit her like a physical blow, tearing through the carefully constructed emotional walls she had built over the last eight months.

“I didn’t steal anything from you!” she cried out, her voice cracking with the suppressed agony of a hundred sleepless nights.

“I saved this baby from a life surrounded by bodyguards, bulletproof glass, and enemies who would use a child as leverage to destroy you.”

Julian’s jaw clenched so hard she could hear the faint, sickening grind of his teeth.

He slowly moved his right hand from the armrest, hovering it just an inch above the swollen curve of her stomach, craving the contact but not daring to cross the line.

“Who threatened you, Elise?” he demanded, his voice dropping an octave, vibrating with a deadly, quiet menace that terrified her.

She shook her head, pressing her lips together, refusing to give him the name that had forced her to flee into the shadows.

“It doesn’t matter anymore,” she insisted, pushing her chair back slightly, though the heavy table behind her prevented any real escape.

“It matters because whoever made you feel like you had to run is going to die a very slow, very painful death,” Julian swore, and the absolute sincerity in his eyes made her shiver.

Suddenly, a sharp, agonizing cramp seized her lower back, wrapping around her abdomen like a band of tightening iron.

Elise gasped loudly, her hands flying to her stomach as she doubled over in the chair.

Julian’s anger vanished instantly, replaced by a flash of raw, unfiltered panic.
