Chapter 7 - The Poison Swapped
Richard was growing impatient. Clara’s physical health was improving too fast, and the deadline for his massive gambling debts was approaching. He needed her dead—for real this time.
He hosted an intimate dinner party to celebrate Clara's "recovery." It was the perfect alibi.
Elena was serving drinks. In the kitchen, she watched through the crack in the door as Richard slipped a vial of clear liquid into Clara’s crystal wine glass.
Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. She picked up the serving tray. As she walked to the dining room, she purposely stumbled, bumping the table. The glasses clinked together. In a sleight of hand she had practiced for three days, Elena swapped Clara’s glass with Vivian’s.
“Watch it, you clumsy idiot!” Vivian snapped.
“I’m so sorry,” Elena bowed her head.
Richard raised his glass. “To my beautiful wife. A second chance at life.”
Vivian smirked and took a deep drink of her wine. Clara only pretended to sip hers.

Ten minutes later, Vivian gasped. Her fork clattered to the plate. Her eyes bulged as the paralytic toxin hit her nervous system. She collapsed onto the floor, seizing.
Richard leaped from his chair, horrified. He looked at Clara’s glass, then at Vivian on the floor. He realized exactly what had happened.
