Chapter 3 - The Unlikely Alliance

Elena was officially fired from the Vance estate the next morning by Richard, but she refused to leave Clara unprotected. She slept in the hospital waiting room, bribing a sympathetic night nurse with her meager savings to let her sit in Clara’s room after hours.

On the third night, Clara woke up.

Her pale blue eyes fluttered open, locking onto the ceiling before snapping to Elena.

“Elena,” Clara rasped, her throat raw from the intubation tube that had just been removed.

“I’m here, Mrs. Vance,” Elena whispered, gripping her hand.

“He... he watched me,” Clara sobbed, tears spilling down her cheeks. “I was paralyzed on the bed. I couldn't move, couldn't speak. But I could see him. Richard kissed my forehead and told me to enjoy the dark. He watched them put me in the body bag.”

Elena felt a chill run down her spine. “The police suspect him, but they have no proof. He wiped the security cameras.”

Clara’s gaze hardened. The terror in her eyes was melting, replaced by the white-hot fury of a woman who had literally crawled out of the grave.

“Elena, you saved my life,” Clara whispered, her grip tightening on the maid’s hand. “Help me destroy him.”
