Chapter 9 - Justice Served Cold

The heavy silence in the massive courtroom was completely deafening as the stern judge asked the jury foreman to read the final verdict.
"On the severe charge of first-degree attempted murder, we officially find the defendant, Claudia Vance, absolutely guilty," the foreman announced loudly.
Claudia immediately let out a loud, dramatic wail, collapsing heavily against her frustrated attorney as the heavy reality of her ruined life finally set in.
"On the severe charge of first-degree attempted murder, we officially find the defendant, Mark Vance, absolutely guilty," the foreman continued without a single pause.
My son simply hung his heavy head in complete shame, silently accepting the horrible fate he had selfishly brought upon himself.
The stern judge slammed his heavy wooden gavel aggressively, demanding complete order in the chaotic, buzzing courtroom.
He looked down fiercely at the two pathetic monsters standing before his high bench with sheer, unhidden disgust in his eyes.
"In all my long years sitting on this bench, I have rarely seen a crime so deeply cold, calculated, and completely devoid of human empathy," the judge stated firmly.
"You deeply betrayed the most sacred, foundational trust a helpless child places in their supposed protectors, solely for your own selfish financial gain."
The judge slowly adjusted his glasses and handed down the absolute maximum sentences allowed by state law.
Claudia was officially sentenced to forty-five consecutive years in a maximum-security state penitentiary without any possibility of early parole.
Mark was heavily sentenced to thirty-five consecutive years, ensuring that he would likely spend the rest of his natural life behind cold steel bars.
As the heavy bailiffs moved in aggressively to drag them away, Mark turned around and desperately mouthed the words "I'm sorry" to me one last time.
I simply turned my back on him completely, feeling absolutely nothing but a cold, satisfying emptiness toward the man who used to be my son.
Justice had finally been fully served, and the dark, terrifying chapter of our lives was officially and permanently closed forever.

I walked proudly out of the massive courthouse and stepped into the bright, warm afternoon sunlight.
Ethan was waiting patiently for me by my car, offering a huge, genuine smile that absolutely melted my old heart.
