Chapter 10 - A New Christmas Tradition

Exactly two full years had passed since the terrible night that completely changed our family dynamic forever.

The freezing winter snow was falling beautifully outside the large windows of our newly renovated, incredibly warm living room.

The festive Christmas tree was brightly lit with hundreds of colorful lights, surrounded by a massive pile of beautifully wrapped gifts.

The wonderful smell of roasted turkey, fresh homemade tamales, and warm apple cider completely filled the entire house.

Ethan, now a completely healthy and incredibly vibrant twenty-year-old college student, was actively helping me set the large dining room table.

He moved with absolute grace and strong confidence, showing absolutely no lingering signs of the horrible poison that once threatened to end his life.

He carefully placed a large, heavy tray of steaming hot sweet potatoes perfectly in the center of the wooden table.

He looked up at me and flashed a deeply knowing, highly emotional smile that silently acknowledged the dark past we had overcome.

"They look absolutely perfect this year, Grandpa," Ethan laughed softly, wiping his clean hands on a kitchen towel.

"They certainly do, son," I replied warmly, placing a gentle, loving hand firmly on his broad shoulder.

We did not invite any extended family or noisy friends over for the holiday dinner; it was just the two of us, exactly the way we happily preferred it.

We raised our crystal glasses of sparkling cider, gently clinking them together in a heartfelt, meaningful toast to survival.

We successfully survived the darkest, most terrifying betrayal imaginable and emerged much stronger, closer, and infinitely happier on the other side.

The old, cursed lockbox was entirely gone, the monsters were permanently locked away in tiny concrete cages, and our house was finally filled with genuine, warm love.

As we sat down comfortably to enjoy our beautiful, peaceful meal, I looked proudly across the table at my incredible grandson.

I realized in that exact moment that the greatest, most valuable gift I had ever received in my long life was the precious opportunity to save his.

We ate our warm food, laughed loudly at old stories, and thoroughly enjoyed the absolute peace of a perfect, highly deserved Christmas night.
