Chapter 1 - The Discovery Under the Floorboards

I followed Ethan up the creaking wooden stairs, my heart pounding with a mixture of rage and sorrow.

Every single step felt heavier than the last as I watched my grandson’s frail body shake from the freezing cold.

The hallway was incredibly dark, illuminated only by the faint, icy glow of the streetlights bleeding through the window.

When we finally reached his small bedroom at the end of the hall, the drastic drop in temperature was instantly noticeable.

There was absolutely no heat coming through the vents in this part of the house.

Ethan immediately walked over to his small, battered closet and began pulling out a worn duffel bag.

“You don’t have to do this, Grandpa,” he whispered, his teeth still violently chattering.

“I am not leaving you in this house for another second, Ethan,” I replied firmly, grabbing a stack of his faded sweaters.

As I moved toward his small dresser to pack his socks, the toe of my heavy winter boot caught on the edge of the area rug.

The rug bunched up, revealing a section of the hardwood floor that looked completely different from the rest.

One of the wooden planks was severely warped, slightly raised, and visibly loose at the edges.

“Ethan, what is under this board?” I asked, kneeling down to get a closer look.

He stopped packing and turned around, his eyes widening in pure panic.

“Nothing, Grandpa, please just leave it alone,” he pleaded, taking a step toward me.

But my instincts as a former police officer were screaming that something was terribly wrong.

I wedged my car keys under the edge of the loose wooden board and pried it upward with a sharp twist.

The board popped out with a loud snap, exposing a dark, hollow space between the floor joists.

Inside the dusty cavity sat a large, heavy metal lockbox covered in scratches.

I reached down and pulled the cold metal box out, setting it gently on the top of Ethan’s mattress.

“Where did this come from, son?” I asked, staring at the small combination lock holding it shut.

Ethan shook his head frantically, wiping fresh tears from his frozen cheeks.

“I found it in Claudia’s home office last week when I was cleaning, and I hid it because it had my name on it,” he confessed softly.

“Do you know the combination?” I demanded, feeling a sick knot form tightly in my stomach.

He nodded slowly, reaching out with trembling fingers to spin the small metal dials to his own birth year.

The heavy latch clicked open with a metallic thud, and I pushed the lid back to reveal the horrifying contents inside.
