Chapter 6 - The Struggle in the Dark

Vanessa smiled that same sickening smile from the party.
"How did you get out of police custody?" I demanded, clutching Lily’s folder to my chest.
"Money opens every door in this city, sweetheart," Vanessa laughed coldly.
"Your parents are currently taking the fall for child endangerment, keeping the cops busy."
"Meanwhile, I came back to clean up the loose ends."
She pointed the gun directly at my face.
"I told your idiot father not to use that horse tranquilizer on Lily," Vanessa sighed.
"It makes the merchandise look practically dead, which ruined the handover."
"But since you found out about our little family business, you'll have to take a permanent vacation."
I didn't think; I just reacted.
I grabbed the heavy metal lock from the filing cabinet and threw it as hard as I could at her face.
It smashed into her cheekbone, throwing off her aim.
The gun fired with a muffled pfft, the bullet tearing through a box next to my head.
I tackled her into the dust.
We rolled across the attic floor, kicking and scratching like wild animals.
Vanessa was strong, but she didn't have the rage of a mother who almost lost her child.
I pinned her arm down and smashed my elbow into her nose.
She screamed, dropping the weapon.

I kicked the gun down the attic stairs and dragged Vanessa up by her designer hair.
"Where is she?" I screamed. "Where is Nora?!"
