Chapter 6 - The Implosion
The revelation of the embezzled business funds was the final nail in the coffin for Martín and Clara’s fake life.
Once Arthur submitted the new evidence to the courts, the district attorney took a sudden, intense interest in the case.
The civil lawsuit was rapidly evolving into a massive criminal investigation.
Under the crushing weight of impending ruin, their supposedly perfect marriage instantly shattered.
Through the legal grapevine, Arthur informed me that Clara had hired a divorce attorney.
She was desperately trying to throw Martín under the bus, claiming she knew nothing about the forged signatures or the stolen money.
She wanted full custody of the twins and whatever assets were left.
Martín retaliated by releasing audio recordings he had secretly made of Clara orchestrating the bank fraud.
They were destroying each other, tearing their family apart with the same viciousness they had directed at me.
One rainy Tuesday, Martín showed up unannounced at the lobby of my apartment building.
The concierge called up to inform me, and despite my better judgment, I agreed to meet him in the public lobby.
He looked ten years older, with deep dark circles under his eyes and a rumpled suit.
"Mom, she’s leaving me," he cried, breaking down in tears right there next to the marble fountain.
"She took the twins and went to her mother's house, and the bank is foreclosing on our home."
I stood perfectly still, feeling absolutely no pity for the weeping man in front of me.
"You made your choices, Martín," I said softly, my voice devoid of any maternal warmth.
"You stole from your dying father, and you tried to rob your grieving mother."
He reached out to grab my hand, but I stepped back instinctively.
"I’m sorry, I was just so desperate to keep Clara happy," he sobbed.

I walked away, leaving him weeping alone in the lobby, finally facing the reality of his actions.
