Chapter 2 - The Gathering Storm

I did not sleep a single wink that night.
Instead, I sat at the small, wobbly motel desk with a yellow legal pad and a pen.
I began to list every single financial contribution I had made to Martín and Clara’s life over the last three years.
The down payment on their luxury SUVs.
The private preschool tuition for the twins.
The endless grocery runs, the utility bills, and the lavish vacations they took while I stayed home to babysit.
The numbers added up to a staggering, nauseating total.
I had been so blinded by my desire to feel needed that I had funded their entire existence.
By 8:00 AM, I was sitting in the polished office of Arthur Pendelton, the toughest estate lawyer in town.
Arthur had handled Robert’s will, and he was absolutely livid when I showed him the fake power of attorney document Sarah had emailed me.
"This is textbook elder abuse and financial fraud," Arthur stated, taking off his glasses and rubbing his temples.
"Your son and his wife have crossed a legal line that leads straight to a federal prison."
Hearing it spoken aloud made my stomach churn.
Martín was my flesh and blood, the boy I had raised.
"What do we do now?" I asked, my voice much stronger than I felt inside.
"First, we secure your remaining assets into a newly formed trust that they cannot touch," Arthur explained.
"Second, we file a police report for the forged signature."
I hesitated for a fraction of a second, the image of my son as a little boy flashing through my mind.
But then I remembered the cold, indifferent look on his face when Clara gave me the ultimatum.
"Do it," I said firmly, my resolve hardening like steel.
"I want every single dime back, and I want them to face the consequences of their greed."
Arthur smiled, a predatory gleam in his eye.

"Leave it to me, my dear," he said.
"By the time we are done, they will be the ones begging for a place to stay."
