Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Betrayal

While Arthur handled the lawsuit, I decided to go through a storage unit where I had kept Robert’s old business files.

I was looking for some original tax documents Arthur needed, but I stumbled upon something far more sinister.

In a locked metal box, hidden at the bottom of a dusty crate, I found a stack of bank statements from five years ago.

They were from the family business that Robert had built from the ground up and eventually sold.

As I flipped through the yellowing pages, a sickening pattern began to emerge.

Large sums of money had been siphoned off the company books into a hidden, secondary account.

I cross-referenced the dates with old family events, and my breath caught in my throat.

The transfers matched the exact dates Martín had claimed he received "promotions" or "bonuses" at his corporate job.

Martín had not started stealing from me after Robert died.

He had been embezzling money from his own father for years while Robert was sick and dying.

Tears of pure, unadulterated fury streamed down my face in the dim light of the storage unit.

Robert had died believing his son was a self-made success.

Instead, Martín was a parasite who had been draining us dry for half a decade.

I clutched the files to my chest, a new, fiery determination taking root in my soul.

This was no longer just about the money or the harsh ultimatum they had given me.

This was about avenging my late husband and exposing the absolute monster my son had become.

I drove straight to Arthur’s office and dropped the metal box on his heavy mahogany desk.

"Add this to the lawsuit," I demanded, my voice shaking with rage.

"I want them completely ruined."
