Chapter 9 - The Collapse of the Empire

The fallout over the next month was biblical.

Greg pled guilty to the charges stemming from the school incident to avoid a lengthy trial. He was sentenced to three years in state prison. Without Greg's income, and with her secret bank account frozen by the federal fraud investigation, Vanessa lost the house.

The perfectly curated life she had projected on Facebook shattered into a million pieces.

Family members who had previously attacked me online quietly deleted their comments. Some sent apologies, which I ignored. I didn't care about their validation; I only cared about the three kids sleeping safely under my roof.

Vanessa tried to reach out one last time. She showed up at my front door on a rainy Tuesday evening, looking hollowed out. Her hair was unwashed, her designer clothes replaced by sweatpants.

I opened the door, keeping the chain locked.

“Sarah, please,” she begged, tears mixing with the rain on her face. “I have nothing. I’m living in my car. Please, let me see them. Let me see my babies.”

I looked at the woman who had tormented my son, who had starved her own children for a pair of shoes, who had tried to ruin my life out of pure spite.

“Your babies don't want to see you, Vanessa,” I said softly. “They are finally healing. They are finally kids.”

“I’m their mother!”

“Biology doesn't make you a mother. Showing up does. And you never showed up.”

I didn't yell. I didn't gloat. I just gently closed the door and locked it. I walked back into the living room, where Leo, Chloe, and Ethan were laughing at a movie on the television.

The ice in my chest had finally melted, replaced by a warm, fierce, unshakeable love.
