Chapter 7 - The Custody Hearing

The family courthouse was a sterile, unforgiving building. I sat at the plaintiff's table with Elena, wearing a sharp navy suit. Behind me sat my mother, Diane. She had finally stopped crying and started seeing reality.

Vanessa walked in with her attorney. She wore a modest, pastel dress, carrying a Bible. She looked like a grieving, pious mother. It was an Academy Award-winning performance.

The judge, a no-nonsense woman named Judge Harper, called the court to order.

Vanessa’s lawyer started first. He painted a picture of a loving family going through a “rough patch,” victimized by a vindictive, jealous aunt. He argued that taking teenagers away from their biological mother was unnatural and traumatizing.

Then, it was Elena’s turn.

She didn't make a speech. She just presented the evidence.

Exhibit A: The text messages spanning three years. Exhibit B: The CPS report detailing the state of the home and Greg’s alcoholism. Exhibit C: The police report from the school incident.

But the fatal blow came when Elena called Chloe to the stand.

Chloe looked terrified, but she held her head high. She looked directly at her mother.

“My mother never loved us,” Chloe testified, her voice echoing in the silent courtroom. “She loved how we looked on Facebook. When the cameras were off, we were invisible. Aunt Sarah is the only reason Ethan and I have eaten a hot meal every day this week. Aunt Sarah is the only reason we are safe.”

Vanessa stood up, tears streaming down her face. “She’s lying! Sarah brainwashed her! Your Honor, I love my children!”

Elena stepped forward and slammed the financial dossier onto the judge's bench.

“If you love them, Mrs. Vance, why did your husband steal twenty thousand dollars in your daughter's name? And why, precisely, have you been hiding forty thousand dollars in a secret account while your children’s electricity was shut off?”

Vanessa froze. The color drained from her face, leaving her looking like a ghost. She looked at her lawyer, who was frantically reading the documents, realizing he had been completely blindsided by his own client.

Judge Harper looked over her glasses at Vanessa, pure disgust radiating from her expression.
