Chapter 8 - The Grandmother’s Choice

Before the judge made her ruling, she called for a fifteen-minute recess.
In the hallway, Vanessa cornered our mother, Diane. Vanessa was frantic, her polished facade completely shredded.
“Mom, you have to help me!” Vanessa pleaded, grabbing Diane’s arm. “You have to testify that Sarah is crazy! Tell them Sarah has a history of making things up! Tell them I’m a good mother!”
For years, Diane had enabled Vanessa. She had made excuses for her, paid her bills when Greg blew his paycheck, and turned a blind eye to the neglect because admitting her daughter was a monster was too painful.
I stood a few feet away, holding my breath. This was the moment of truth.
Diane looked at Vanessa’s manicured hands gripping her arm. Then, Diane looked at Chloe, who was standing beside me, trembling.
Diane gently, but firmly, peeled Vanessa’s hands off her.
“You are not a good mother, Vanessa,” Diane said, her voice breaking but filled with newfound resolve. “You are a selfish, cruel girl who never grew up. I enabled you, and I will regret that for the rest of my life. But I will not let you destroy my grandchildren. Not anymore.”
Vanessa gasped, stepping back as if she had been slapped. “You’re taking her side? You’re abandoning me?”
“I’m choosing the kids,” Diane said flatly. “Do not ever call my house again.”
Diane walked over to me, wrapping her arms around Chloe. Vanessa was left standing alone in the hallway, completely abandoned by the family she had tried to manipulate.
When court resumed, the ruling was swift and merciless.

Judge Harper stripped Vanessa and Greg of all custody rights. I was granted full, permanent legal guardianship of Chloe and Ethan. Furthermore, the judge forwarded the financial documents to the district attorney for a criminal fraud investigation regarding the stolen identity and the hidden funds.
As the gavel came down, Vanessa finally broke. She didn't yell. She just collapsed into her chair, burying her face in her hands, entirely defeated.
