Chapter 7 - The Aftermath

The fallout was biblical.

The media tore into the story like starving wolves. The sensational headlines—BILLIONAIRE'S BROTHER AND WIFE CAUGHT IN SICK PLOT!—dominated the news cycle for weeks. The board of directors, initially panicked by the drama, rallied behind me when I presented the ironclad proof that not a single cent of corporate funds had actually been lost, thanks to my preemptive cyber-security measures. In fact, our stock rose on the narrative of the "ruthless, brilliant CEO who outsmarted a coup."

But I didn't care about the stock. I cared about my boys.

The morning after the gala, I sat in the living room of the estate. The hidden cameras were gone. The oppressive, chilling energy that Eleanor had brought to this house had vanished with her.

Leo and Julian came running down the stairs in their pajamas. They stopped dead in their tracks when they saw who was sitting on the sofa next to me.

"Clara!" Julian screamed, launching himself across the room.

Clara caught him, burying her face in his hair, tears streaming down her face. Leo walked over more slowly, his eyes wide. He looked at me, a silent question in his gaze.

"It’s over, buddy," I told him, pulling him onto my lap. "The bad guys are gone. They are never, ever coming back."

Leo let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension of the past few weeks finally leaving his small body. He wrapped his arms around my neck and squeezed tight. "You kept your promise, Daddy. You played the spy game."

"And we won," I whispered.

I looked at Clara over the boys' heads. "I have a proposition for you, Clara. I don't want you to be an employee anymore. I want you to be the estate manager. You’ll have your own suite, double your previous salary, full benefits, and absolute authority over the household staff. But more importantly... you are family now."

Clara wiped a tear from her cheek and smiled. "I accept, Mr. Vance."
