Chapter 3 - Blood and Betrayal

David.

My younger brother, the Vice President of Operations for my hotel empire. The man I had pulled out of a mountain of gambling debt a decade ago. The man I had given a corner office, a seven-figure salary, and absolute trust.

"When are we moving on phase two?" David’s voice crackled through the intercepted audio. "The offshore accounts are prepped. If we initiate the wire transfers next week while he’s in Nevada for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, it will look like a corporate oversight. By the time the board realizes the liquidity is gone, we’ll be in St. Barts."

"Patience, darling," Eleanor replied, her tone dripping with venomous affection. "I need him to sign the revised custodial trust first. Once he grants me full unilateral authority over the boys' education, I can ship them to that disciplinary academy in Switzerland. They take kids year-round. No visitations for the first twelve months. Once the brats are out of the country, Arthur will be so distracted trying to get them back, he won't even notice the company bleeding dry."

I yanked the headphones off, gasping for air as if I had been punched in the throat.

They weren't just having an affair. They were orchestrating a hostile takeover of my entire life's work, stealing my fortune, and planning to effectively exile my children to a foreign institution to get them out of the way.

I poured myself a glass of scotch, my hands shaking with a rage so primal it terrified me. I could walk into the bedroom right now. I could confront her. I could drive to David’s penthouse and beat him within an inch of his life.

But violence was a temporary release. It wouldn't protect my boys, and it wouldn't save Clara.

Clara.

I checked my gold Rolex. It was 3:00 AM.

I pulled out a burner phone Marcus had provided and dialed a number.

"It's Arthur," I said when the voice answered on the first ring. "I need you to go to the 12th Precinct. Post bail for Clara Hayes. Use the shell corporation accounts, leave my name entirely off the paperwork. Once she's out, move her to the penthouse suite at the Grand Marquis. Put two armed guards on her door. And hire the most ruthless criminal defense attorney in the state to represent her."

"Consider it done," Marcus replied.

I hung up, staring at the surveillance feeds on my monitor. Eleanor was sleeping peacefully, dreaming of a life built on my ruin.

Sleep well, Eleanor, I thought, a dark, dangerous smile creeping onto my face. It’s the last peaceful rest you’ll ever have.
