Chapter 10 - The Unbreakable Foundation

Five years later.
The California sun was setting over the Pacific Ocean, casting a golden glow across the massive backyard of our estate.
I stood on the patio, holding a glass of iced tea, watching the chaotic, beautiful scene unfolding on the lawn. Leo and Julian, now twelve years old, were tackling each other in a muddy game of touch football. They were loud, they were messy, and they were blissfully, wonderfully happy.
There were no shadows in their eyes anymore. They were confident, brilliant boys who knew they were loved beyond measure.
Clara was sitting in a lounge chair nearby, laughing as Julian accidentally threw the football into a rosebush.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was an email from my legal team. Eleanor’s parole hearing had been denied again. She would remain locked away for another three years. I swiped the email away without a second thought. She was a ghost from a past life, powerless and forgotten.
Leo ran up to the patio, covered in grass stains, panting heavily.
"Dad! Did you see that catch?" he beamed, his eyes sparkling with joy.
I reached out and ruffled his messy hair. "I saw it, buddy. It was incredible."
He grinned, turning back to run toward his brother. "Julian! Prepare to be destroyed!" he yelled, diving back into the fray.
I took a sip of my tea, a profound sense of peace washing over me.
Years ago, in the middle of a dark kitchen, a terrified little boy’s whisper had shattered my reality. It had destroyed the illusion of my perfect life, tearing down the walls of my mansion to reveal the rot inside.
But as I watched my sons tackle each other in the golden evening light, surrounded by laughter and safety, I realized something important.
