Chapter 5 - The Gala of Lies

The climax of their pathetic conspiracy was scheduled for the night of the annual Vance Hospitality Charity Gala.

It was the social event of the season, hosted in the grand ballroom of my flagship hotel in downtown San Francisco. Five hundred of the city’s elite, board members, investors, and local politicians were in attendance.

Eleanor wore a custom, backless crimson gown that turned every head in the room. She clung to my arm, playing the perfect, adoring wife for the cameras. David was there too, wearing a bespoke tuxedo, laughing with investors and drinking top-shelf scotch.

They thought this was their victory party.

Earlier that day, David had initiated the final, massive wire transfer—forty million dollars. He believed the money was safely overseas. He believed he was a king.

I stood on the balcony overlooking the glittering ballroom, swirling a glass of sparkling water. Marcus stepped out of the shadows, looking like a regular wealthy guest in his tuxedo.

"Are the assets secured?" I asked quietly.

"Every penny," Marcus confirmed. "David’s offshore accounts have a balance of zero. Your board of directors has been privately briefed in a secure room upstairs. The police are waiting in the service corridors. The warrants for corporate fraud, embezzlement, child endangerment, and filing a false police report have all been signed by a judge."

"And Clara?"

"Waiting in the wings."

I smiled, adjusting my cuffs. "Showtime."

I walked down the grand staircase and made my way to the main stage. The orchestra faded out as I tapped the microphone. The room fell silent, hundreds of faces looking up at me. I spotted Eleanor standing near the front, radiating smug confidence. David stood a few feet behind her, raising his glass to me in a silent, mocking toast.

"Thank you all for coming tonight," I began, my voice echoing powerfully through the ballroom. "We are here to celebrate family, loyalty, and trust. These are the pillars of the Vance empire."

Eleanor beamed.

"But recently," I continued, my tone dropping a fraction of an octave, shifting from warm to glacial, "I was reminded that trust is easily exploited by those closest to us. Sometimes, the monsters aren't hiding in the dark. Sometimes, they are sleeping in our beds. And sometimes, they are sitting in our boardrooms."

The smile on Eleanor’s face faltered. A ripple of confused murmurs washed through the crowd.

David lowered his glass, his brow furrowing.

I signaled the AV team.

The massive digital screens behind the stage, which had been displaying our charity logo, suddenly flickered.

"A few weeks ago, my wife accused our devoted nanny of grand larceny," I announced to the room. "She had her arrested in front of my screaming children. It was a tragedy. But it was also a lie."

The screens lit up. It wasn't a charity video. It was crisp, high-definition night-vision footage from the hidden camera in the hallway of my estate.

The entire ballroom watched in stunned, breathless silence as a massive projection of Eleanor Vance tip-toed down the hallway. They watched her look over her shoulder, pull a velvet pouch of diamonds from her robe, and violently shove them into Clara’s backpack.

Gasps erupted from the crowd. Eleanor’s face drained of all color. She looked like a ghost trapped in a crimson dress.

"Arthur, what is this?!" she shrieked, panic breaking her carefully curated facade. "Turn that off! It's a deepfake! It's a lie!"

"Oh, it's very real, Eleanor," I said into the microphone. "Just like this is real."

The video shifted. It was an audio recording graph. The voices of Eleanor and David echoed through the massive ballroom speakers.

"Once the brats are out of the country, Arthur will be so distracted trying to get them back, he won't even notice the company bleeding dry."

Every single investor, every board member, and every socialite turned to stare at David and Eleanor. The silence was deafening, heavy with absolute, catastrophic ruin.
