Chapter 17 - The Trial - The Star Witness

On the fifth day of trial, the courtroom reached its dramatic, evidentiary apex when the State called its star co-conspirator witness to the stand: Victoria Sterling.
A collective murmur rippled through the crowded gallery as Julian’s mistress was sworn in at the witness box. Wearing a plain, dark gray pantsuit from seasons ago, her hair pulled back into a simple ponytail, Victoria looked completely stripped of the high-society arrogance she had paraded around Chicago six months ago. Facing a mandatory fifteen-year federal prison sentence if she violated her proffer agreement, she sat slumped in the chair, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, avoiding eye contact with Julian at the defense table.
Under ADA Evelyn Thorne’s surgical questioning, Victoria systematically dismantled every single lie the defense had attempted to construct regarding Julian’s financial motives and physical premeditation. She confirmed under oath that Julian had confessed to forging Clara’s signature onto the Delaware shell company documents, and that the four point eight million dollars wired to Zurich was the direct proceeds of Clara’s stolen inheritance trust.
"Ms. Sterling," ADA Thorne asked, stepping close to the witness box with her legal pad. "On the afternoon of May 14th—barely six hours before the defendant assaulted his wife on Elm Street—did you have a telephone conversation with Mr. Montgomery regarding his financial situation?"
"Yes," Victoria whispered into the microphone, her voice trembling slightly. "Julian called me from his car while driving back from the country club. He was panicked because he realized Continental Bank had sent a notice of default directly to his home address, and he knew Clara would open the mail before he got home."
"And what specific plan did the defendant articulate during that phone call to prevent his wife from discovering the missing five million dollars?"
Victoria burst into tears, covering her mouth with her hand before forcing herself to look directly at the jury box. "He told me he was going to trigger a medical emergency!" she sobbed into the microphone. "He knew Clara was eight months pregnant! He said that if he put her in the hospital with a severe abdominal injury or induced early labor, she would be medically incapacitated and under heavy sedation in the ICU for weeks! He told me that while she was unconscious, he would use his statutory rights as her husband to override the bank's fraud alerts and permanently clear the five million dollars to our Swiss account before anyone could stop him!"
At the defense table, Julian lost his composure entirely. He jumped to his feet, knocking his chair backward onto the linoleum floor with a deafening crash, his face turning dark purple with rage as he pointed his shackled hands toward the witness stand.
"You lying, manipulative bitch!" Julian screamed at his former mistress at the top of his lungs, his voice echoing hysterically through the courtroom. "You sold me out to save your own skin! I stole that money to buy you that penthouse, you ungrateful gold-digger! I did this for us!"
"Order! Order in the court!" Judge Harrison roared from the bench, pounding his gavel furiously as four armed court bailiffs rushed the defense table, grabbing Julian by his arms and forcing him face-down onto the mahogany table to restrain him. "Bailiffs, remove the defendant to the holding cells immediately! This court is in recess for thirty minutes!"
As they dragged Julian kicking and screaming out of the courtroom, hurling obscenities at Victoria and cursing my family's name, the jury sat in absolute, horrified shock. In that single, violent outburst of uncontrollable narcissistic rage, Julian had stripped away his own defense and proven to the twelve jurors beyond a shadow of a doubt exactly who and what he was: a violent, unrepentant predator who had premeditated physical harm against his pregnant wife to facilitate a bank robbery.

When the courtroom reconvened after the recess, the prosecution executed its final checkmate move: publishing Government’s Exhibit 1 to the jury—the high-definition, unedited closet nursery camera video of Julian executing the shove in the hallway, accompanied immediately by the heartbreaking 911 audio recording of seven-year-old Noah calling for help.
The defense rested its case without calling a single witness or putting Julian back on the stand—his public defender realizing that any further exposure would only compound his inevitable sentence. The stage was set for the final verdict.
