Chapter 11 - The Deposition of Treason

By the third week of August, the financial and civil siege orchestrated by Elena Rostova reached its absolute culmination. In the civil division of the Federal District Court, our multi-million-dollar RICO, fraud, and asset recovery lawsuits against Julian Montgomery, Victoria Sterling, and the Apex Consulting shell company were moving forward with surgical speed.

Because Victoria Sterling’s Swiss bank accounts had been frozen by federal investigators and her Gold Coast penthouse had been impounded by US Marshals, her high-society lifestyle had completely evaporated. Stripped of Julian’s stolen money and facing the terrifying prospect of a fifteen-year federal prison sentence for money laundering and wire fraud conspiracy, Victoria made the cold, calculated decision to save her own skin by offering complete, unvarnished cooperation to our civil team and federal prosecutors.

On a rainy Tuesday morning, Elena and I sat across a polished mahogany table in the formal deposition room of Vance Global Security. Sitting opposite us was Victoria Sterling, wearing a plain black Zara suit from seasons ago, her face scrubbed clean of makeup, looking exhausted, nervous, and entirely stripped of the arrogance she had displayed in the hospital hallway a month earlier. Beside her sat her court-appointed public defender, who had bluntly advised her to answer every single question truthfully to secure her federal proffer agreement.

Elena turned on the digital video recorder, administered the oath, and slid a thick binder of financial transaction logs across the table toward Victoria.

"Ms. Sterling," Elena began, her voice smooth and razor-sharp. "For the record, please describe the financial arrangement you maintained with the defendant, Julian Montgomery, between January 2024 and July 2026."

Victoria swallowed hard, her hands trembling around a paper cup of water. "Julian... Julian utilized me as a nominee director for Apex Commercial Consulting LLC. He told me that his primary real estate firm was carrying forty million dollars in toxic commercial debt that he couldn't refinance through standard banking channels without triggering a board audit."

"And what was the specific purpose of creating the Apex Consulting shell account in Delaware?" Elena asked, tapping her pen against the legal pad.

"To siphon capital out of his wife’s private inheritance accounts," Victoria confessed, her words spilling out in a rapid, desperate torrent to clear her record. "Julian told me that Clara Vance possessed a five-million-dollar generation-skipping trust fund inherited from her grandmother, but that the prenuptial agreement he signed prevented him from accessing the principal balance during the marriage without her explicit, notarized co-signature."

"How did he bypass that prenuptial restriction three weeks ago?"

"He forged her signature!" Victoria blurted out, wiping her nose with a tissue. "He brought a digital scanning tablet to my penthouse on July 10th. I watched him manually trace Clara’s signature from an old tax return onto four separate wire authorization forms and a general power of attorney. He then paid a corrupt notary public from his office five thousand dollars in cash to illegally stamp and certify the documents without Clara ever being present in the room."

Elena slid a printed copy of a text message chain across the table—the exact messages retrieved from Julian’s seized phone. "Ms. Sterling, on the afternoon of July 26th—barely six hours before Julian assaulted his wife—he sent you a text message stating: ‘The wire is initiated. Once I handle the domestic obstacle tonight, the five million is ours free and clear.’ What did you understand ‘handling the domestic obstacle’ to mean?"

Victoria burst into tears, covering her face with her hands as the full, horrifying reality of her complicity was recorded for the federal courts. "He told me he was going to trigger a medical emergency!" she sobbed into her palms. "He knew Clara was eight months pregnant! He said that if he put her in the hospital with a severe injury or an induced early labor, she would be medically incapacitated and under heavy sedation for weeks! He told me that while she was unconscious in the ICU, he would use his statutory rights as her husband to override the bank's fraud alerts and permanently clear the five million dollars to our Swiss account before anyone could stop him!"

In the observation chairs, I clenched my fists so tightly my knuckles turned bone-white. Julian hadn't just lost his temper during an argument about money. He had methodically planned physical violence against my pregnant daughter as a deliberate, tactical distraction to execute a bank robbery.

"Thank you, Ms. Sterling," Elena said coldly, closing her evidence binder with a definitive snap. "Your sworn testimony is recorded and accepted into the public civil and criminal record. You have just guaranteed that Julian Montgomery will never see the outside of a federal prison cell for the rest of his natural life."
