Chapter 9 - The Highway to Salvation

The storm drain spit us out onto the muddy banks of a rushing, freezing river.
We scrambled up the embankment, shivering violently in the cold mountain air.
"There's a highway about two miles north of here," Elena panted, pointing into the woods.
"If we can flag down a truck, we can make it to a federal field office in the city."
We pushed through the dense underbrush, Arthur leaning heavily on my shoulder for support.
Every snapping twig sounded like a gunshot, every shadow looked like a masked killer.
After what felt like an eternity of agonizing hiking, we finally saw the headlights of the interstate.
We climbed over a rusty guardrail and stood on the shoulder of the empty, rain-slicked road.
A massive eighteen-wheeler was approaching in the distance, its bright lights cutting through the darkness.
Elena stepped directly into the middle of the lane, waving her arms frantically in the air.
The truck blared its deafening horn and slammed on the brakes, skidding to a halt just feet away from her.
The driver rolled down his window, looking terrified and incredibly confused.
"Help us!" I yelled, running up to the cab.
"We need you to drive us straight to the FBI headquarters downtown, it's a matter of life and death!"
The driver took one look at our bruised, muddy faces and immediately unlocked the back doors of his cab.
We climbed inside, collapsing onto the small sleeping bunk behind the driver's seat.
The truck shifted gears and roared back onto the highway, leaving the nightmare in the woods behind us.
Arthur pulled both of us into a tight, desperate hug, crying silently into our hair.
"We made it," he whispered, kissing the top of my head.
"We're going to end this tonight."
Elena nodded, her eyes hardening with a fierce, unbreakable resolve.

She was no longer the frightened girl who had shown up on my porch.
She was a warrior ready to destroy the empire that had stolen her life.
