Chapter 1 - The Stranger at the Gate

The warm summer breeze blowing through my backyard barbecue suddenly felt freezing cold.
I was holding a glass of lemonade, watching my real father, Arthur, laugh with my best friend, Jenna.
Everything in my life had finally settled into a peaceful, perfect rhythm after the nightmare of my wedding day.
Margaret, the woman who had falsely claimed to be my mother, was locked away in a federal prison serving a thirty-five-year sentence.
My ex-fiancé, Andrew, and his corrupt family had been utterly destroyed by the financial scandals we had exposed.
I had a new name, a new house, and a newfound sense of identity that nobody could ever take away from me.
Or so I thought.
A sharp knock at the wooden gate of my garden interrupted the sound of the jazz music playing from the patio speakers.
I set my glass down on the picnic table, wiping a bead of condensation from my hand.
I assumed it was just another neighbor coming over to welcome us to the neighborhood.
I walked across the freshly cut grass, the afternoon sun beating down on my shoulders.
When I unlatched the heavy wooden gate, my heart completely stopped in my chest.
Standing on my front porch was a woman who looked exactly like me.
She had the same dark, wavy hair, the same piercing green eyes, and the same bone structure that I had recently inherited from Arthur’s late wife.
She was wearing a trench coat, looking nervous and exhausted, clutching a worn leather briefcase to her chest.
"Are you Clara?" she asked, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and desperation.
I could only nod, completely unable to form a single coherent word in response.
She let out a shaky breath, looking over my shoulder at Arthur, who was still grilling burgers by the patio.

"My name is Elena," the stranger whispered.
"And I think the woman you put in prison kidnapped both of us."
