Chapter 6 - The Safe House

The FBI relocated us to a safe house in the mountains before the sun even set.

It was a heavily fortified cabin surrounded by dense pine trees and armed federal agents.

Arthur was resting in one of the bedrooms, exhausted from the trauma and the painkillers.

I sat on the front porch with Elena, staring out into the pitch-black wilderness.

"Did you ever suspect that you were adopted?" I asked her, breaking the tense silence.

Elena shook her head, pulling a thick woolen blanket tighter around her shoulders.

"Viktor raised me like a princess," she admitted, staring down at her perfectly manicured hands.

"I had private tutors, expensive horses, and a life of absolute luxury in Geneva."

"But he was always incredibly possessive, controlling every person I spoke to and everywhere I went."

She looked over at me, her green eyes reflecting the pale moonlight.

"When I found out about my blood type during a routine medical exam, I started asking questions."

"That's when the princess treatment ended, and the threats began."

I felt a surge of profound anger toward the man who had stolen my sister's freedom.

"We are going to put him away, just like we put Margaret away," I promised her fiercely.

Elena smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes.

"Viktor isn't Margaret, Clara," she warned me in a deadly serious tone.

"Margaret was a greedy con artist looking for an easy retirement fund."

"Viktor is a monster who owns the people who are supposed to lock him up."

Suddenly, my cell phone, which the FBI had supposedly encrypted, rang loudly in my pocket.

I pulled it out and stared at the screen, my blood running completely cold.

The caller ID simply read: "ANDREW."

I looked at Elena, horrified, and then swiped to answer the call on speakerphone.

"Hello, Clara," Andrew's arrogant, venomous voice slithered out of the speaker.

"I hope you're enjoying your little camping trip."
