Chapter 7 - The Traitor on the Line

"How did you get this number?" I demanded, my voice shaking with absolute rage.
Andrew let out a dark, condescending laugh that made my stomach churn.
"My father might have lost his company, but he still has a lot of very powerful friends," Andrew sneered.
"Friends who were very interested to hear about the massive bounty Viktor Volkov placed on your heads."
I gripped the phone so tightly my knuckles turned entirely white.
"You sold us out to a cartel, Andrew?" I asked in disbelief.
"You ruined my life, Clara!" he screamed into the phone, losing his smug composure.
"You embarrassed my family, you destroyed my inheritance, and you treated me like trash!"
"Now, Mr. Volkov has promised to restore my family's wealth in exchange for your exact GPS coordinates."
Before I could say another word, Elena snatched the phone out of my hand.
"Listen to me, you pathetic little worm," Elena said, her voice dropping to a terrifying, icy octave.
"Viktor does not leave loose ends, and he definitely doesn't pay amateurs."
"The moment you gave him this location, you became a liability to him."
There was a long, heavy silence on the other end of the line.
"You're lying," Andrew stammered, though he clearly sounded panicked.
"Look out your window, Andrew," Elena ordered calmly.
A sharp, terrified gasp echoed through the speaker, followed by the sound of shattering glass.
The line went completely dead.
Elena dropped the phone onto the wooden deck and crushed it beneath the heel of her boot.
"They know exactly where we are," she announced, looking up at the surrounding tree line.
"And the FBI agents outside are already dead."

I looked out into the yard and realized the silhouettes of the federal agents hadn't moved in ten minutes.
They were slumped against the trees, silently eliminated in the dark.
