Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Century

The media called it the "Patio Murder Trial," and it dominated national news for over six months.

I sat in the front row of the courtroom every single day, refusing to let my mother forget the lives she had destroyed.

She sat at the defense table wearing expensive suits, her face a mask of cold, unyielding arrogance.

She pleaded not guilty, claiming Denise was a pathological liar who had killed our father in a teenage rage.

But her defense completely shattered when the prosecutors played Michael’s video for the jury.

Hearing my late husband’s voice echo through the silent courtroom brought tears to the eyes of the jurors.

Then came the mechanical experts, who testified that the brake lines on Michael’s car had been deliberately severed with a specialized hydraulic tool.

A tool that was found locked securely in a hidden safe inside my mother’s garage.

Denise took the stand as the star witness, accepting a plea deal for accessory after the fact in exchange for her devastating testimony.

She looked directly at our mother and detailed every single horrific event from that tragic night.

When the verdict was finally read, the courtroom was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

“Guilty on two counts of first-degree murder, and one count of kidnapping.”

My mother didn't cry, and she didn't apologize.

She simply turned and glared at me with cold, dead eyes as the bailiffs placed her in handcuffs.

The judge sentenced her to two consecutive life terms in federal prison without the possibility of parole.

As the heavy wooden doors of the courtroom closed behind her forever, I felt a strange, quiet peace settle over my soul.

The monsters were finally locked away in the dark, and they could never hurt my family again.
