Chapter 1 - The Trap in the Dark

The metallic echo of the heavy steel door slamming shut vibrated violently through the soles of my shoes.
Total darkness consumed the small concrete room, leaving only the pale blue glow of Michael’s laptop screen to illuminate the dusty air.
Panic hit my chest like a physical blow, stealing the breath from my lungs.
I rushed toward the corrugated metal door and slammed my fists against it, the cold steel biting into my skin.
“Hey!” I screamed, my voice cracking as it bounced off the thin walls.
“Is anyone out there? Open this door right now!”
Silence answered me, heavy and suffocating.
Whoever had followed me here, whoever had twisted that deadbolt, was already gone.
I leaned my forehead against the freezing metal, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs.
My mother and sister had left my house just minutes before I did.
They were the only ones who knew I had found the hidden key, and they were the only ones desperate enough to stop me from learning the truth.
I turned back to the makeshift desk where Michael’s laptop sat atop a stack of cardboard boxes.
The video was still playing.
My late husband’s face looked so incredibly alive, his brown eyes filled with a deep, agonizing sorrow that I had never seen when he was with me.
I walked slowly back to the screen, my trembling hands resting on the edge of the open trunk.
“Denise knows what happened the night your father disappeared,” Michael repeated on the recording, his voice thick with emotion.
On the screen, my sister Denise covered her face with her hands and began to sob uncontrollably.
“Tell her, Denise,” Michael urged gently, stepping aside so the camera could capture her completely.
“Tell her before it eats you alive.”
Denise looked directly into the lens, her mascara running down her pale cheeks in dark, jagged streams.
“It wasn’t an accident, Claire,” Denise whispered, her voice shaking violently.
“Mom didn't just kick him out that night, and he didn't run away to start a new life.”
She paused, taking a ragged, agonizing breath.
“She pushed him down the basement stairs during their argument over the offshore bank accounts.”
My knees gave out, and I collapsed onto the hard concrete floor.
The air in the storage unit suddenly felt impossibly thin.

My father hadn't abandoned me when I was twelve years old.
He was murdered by the woman who raised me.
