Chapter 7 - The Surrender

For a terrifying moment, I thought she was going to pull the trigger and end my life right there on the tarmac.

Her eyes locked onto mine, filled with a toxic mixture of hatred and absolute defeat.

“You were always ungrateful, Claire,” she spat venomously.

Slowly, deliberately, she lowered the revolver and let it clatter onto the metal stairs.

Officers swarmed up the steps instantly, tackling her fiercely to the ground and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

I watched as they dragged her down the stairs, her face pressed roughly against the cold asphalt.

She didn't look at me again as they shoved her into the back of a waiting police cruiser.

The adrenaline that had been keeping me upright suddenly vanished, leaving me hollow and completely exhausted.

My knees buckled, and I collapsed onto the freezing tarmac, sobbing uncontrollably into my hands.

Marcus rushed over with Harper, wrapping a heavy emergency blanket tightly around my trembling shoulders.

Harper threw her arms around my neck, crying softly into my coat.

“I’m so sorry, Aunt Claire,” Harper whispered repeatedly.

“I’m sorry I ruined the dress, I didn't know anything about this.”

I hugged her back fiercely, stroking her hair.

“It’s okay, sweetie, none of this is your fault,” I assured her, my voice thick with tears.

A tall, stern-looking FBI agent approached us, holding a digital recorder.

“Are you Claire Davies?” he asked gently.

I nodded, wiping the tears from my freezing face.

“We have your sister in custody at her home, and she is already cooperating with the investigation,” the agent explained.

“We are going to need you to come down to the field office to provide a full statement and hand over the laptop.”

I looked at Marcus, who nodded reassuringly.

“I will be right there with you as your legal counsel,” Marcus promised.

The nightmare was finally coming to an end, but the long, painful process of seeking true justice was just beginning.
