Chapter 4 - The Phone Call

The silence in Marcus’s office was suffocating as the reality of my mother’s monstrous nature settled over us.
Marcus immediately pulled out his phone and dialed a private number for a contact at the state bureau of investigation.
While he spoke in hushed, urgent tones, I picked up my cell phone and dialed my sister’s number.
It rang five times before she finally answered, her breathing shallow and frantic.
“Claire?” Denise whispered, sounding as though she was hiding in a closet.
“Where are you, Denise?” I demanded, my voice cold and hard as steel.
“She knows, Claire,” Denise cried hysterically.
“Mom knows you found the storage unit, and she knows Michael recorded me.”
“Did she lock me in that unit?” I asked, my grip tightening on the phone.
“Yes,” Denise sobbed.
“She went back to your house to get her passport and cash from her safe.”
“She took Harper with her, Claire, she took my daughter and forced her into the car.”
My blood ran ice cold.
My mother was going to use her fifteen-year-old granddaughter as a human shield to escape the country.
“Where are they going, Denise?” I demanded.
“The private airfield in Miller’s Creek,” she replied, her voice breaking.
“She has a charter flight booked for Mexico under a fake name.”
“Stay exactly where you are and do not move,” I ordered her.
“The police are coming for you, and if you cooperate, they might let you live to see your daughter again.”
I hung up the phone and turned to Marcus, who was already grabbing his car keys and a registered firearm from his desk drawer.
“Miller’s Creek airfield,” I told him, my eyes blazing with determination.
“She’s making a run for it.”
May you like
Marcus nodded grimly, racking the slide of his pistol.
“Let’s go catch a monster.”
