Chapter 9 - The Sentencing

The criminal trial was a formality after the civil case.

Eleanor stood before the judge in a drab gray suit, stripped of her makeup, her jewelry, and her pride. Her lawyer begged for probation, citing her age and her previously clean record.

The judge, a stern woman who had zero patience for child abusers, looked down at Eleanor over her glasses.

"Mrs. Sterling, I have reviewed the medical reports, the 911 transcripts, and your own deposition," the judge said, her voice echoing through the courtroom. "You did not make a mistake. You did not have a lapse in judgment. You weaponized a seven-year-old child to punish your daughter over a financial dispute."

Eleanor began to cry quietly.

"Your complete lack of remorse is staggering," the judge continued. "You left a child to freeze. Therefore, I am sentencing you to three years in the state penitentiary, without the possibility of early parole."

The gavel banged.

Eleanor shrieked, her knees buckling as the bailiffs grabbed her arms. "No! No, please! Sarah! Tell them! I'm your mother!"

I sat in the front row, holding Chloe’s fully healed hand. I looked at the woman who had birthed me, the woman who had terrorized me, the woman who had tried to break my child.

I just said, "Ok."

And I walked out of the courtroom, never looking back.
