Chapter 6 - The Trap is Sprung

We sat at my new dining room table. David’s cheap lawyer looked visibly sweating just being in the same room as Marcus Vance.
"My client wants full custody," David's lawyer stammered. "The child's grandmother is willing to testify that Sarah is an unfit mother who abandons her child in the cold."
Marcus took a sip of his coffee. "Is she? Because the grandmother is currently facing three felony charges, and her testimony is legally compromised."
Marcus slid an iPad across the table. It played the Ring doorbell footage from Mrs. Gable’s house. The high-definition audio picked up the exact moment I called Eleanor on speakerphone, recorded legally in a one-party consent state.
“She needed a lesson in what happens when her mother makes arrogant choices.”
David's face went completely pale.
"Furthermore," Marcus continued, "we subpoenaed your bank records, David. We found the $10,000 wire transfer Arthur Sterling sent you yesterday to fund this frivolous custody suit. That is called conspiracy to commit perjury, and extortion."

Marcus leaned forward, the friendly demeanor vanishing. "You have exactly ten seconds to withdraw this petition and sign away all your parental rights, David. Or I hand this file to the district attorney, and you can share a cell block with your former mother-in-law."
David grabbed the pen so fast he nearly tore the paper. He signed his rights away, stood up, and ran out of my house. He never bothered to ask how Chloe was doing.
