Chapter 1 - The 8:00 A.M. Wake-Up Call

Fourteen hours after I hung up the phone, at exactly 8:14 a.m. the next morning, my parents' landline rang.
Eleanor answered it in her pristine kitchen, likely sipping her organic Earl Grey tea. It was her bank. The manager nervously informed her that all of her accounts—her checking, her savings, and her retirement portfolio—had been completely frozen by a federal court order.
Before my mother could even begin to scream at the bank manager, the heavy oak front door of their house didn't just knock. It shuddered under the force of a police battering ram.
"Crestwood Police Department! Open the door!"
My father, Arthur, stumbled out of his study just as three uniformed officers and two detectives breached the hallway. They didn't wipe their boots. They didn't care about Eleanor’s imported Persian rugs.
"Eleanor Sterling," the lead detective barked, stepping into the kitchen. "You are under arrest for felony child endangerment, reckless abandonment, and criminal negligence."
Eleanor dropped her favorite porcelain teacup. It shattered across the hardwood. "This is absurd!" she shrieked, her perfect Sunday-service facade crumbling. "I am a respected member of this community! My granddaughter was perfectly fine!"
"Your granddaughter’s core body temperature dropped to 94 degrees, Mrs. Sterling," the detective said, his voice dripping with disgust as he violently clicked the cold steel handcuffs around her wrists. "She has early-stage frostbite on her fingers. You left a seven-year-old in a blizzard."

Arthur tried to intervene, blustering about lawyers and property rights, but the police shoved him back. As they dragged my screaming, thrashing mother out of her pristine house and into the flashing lights of a squad car in full view of all her wealthy neighbors, I was sitting in a warm hospital room, watching my daughter sleep.
I looked down at my phone as a text came in from Mrs. Gable, the neighbor who had saved Chloe. They just took her away in handcuffs. I locked my screen, kissed Chloe’s warm forehead, and whispered, "The monsters are gone, baby."
