Chapter 9 - The Trial and Ruin

The trial lasted less than three weeks.
With Julian’s testimony and my forensic audit serving as the nails in the coffin, the defense had absolutely no ground to stand on.
I was subpoenaed to testify on the final day. I sat in the witness box, looking directly at Charles and Victoria, who sat at the defense table looking hollowed out, gray, and completely defeated.
"Ms. Navarro," the prosecutor asked. "Can you summarize the financial state of Sterling Enterprises at the time of your audit?"
"It was a criminal enterprise operating as a Ponzi scheme," I stated clearly, my voice echoing in the silent courtroom. "They used new loans to pay off old debts, entirely sustained by fabricated revenue reports."
Charles couldn't even look at me.
The jury deliberated for four hours.
Guilty on all counts.

Charles was sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison. Victoria, as a complicit co-conspirator who had signed off on the tax fraud, received ten years.
Julian, having secured his immunity, walked out of the courthouse a free man. But he was destitute. The feds had seized every penny of the family’s assets for restitution. He had no degree, no work ethic, and a name that was now synonymous with corporate treason.
