Chapter 3 - Monday Morning Massacre

Monday morning arrived with the subtlety of a freight train.

I walked into the Vanguard Equity offices at 7:30 AM, dressed in a sharp navy suit, carrying the finalized Sterling audit in a thick manila folder. My boss, Richard Vance, a ruthless private equity shark, was already waiting for me.

"I saw the viral video from the reception, Clara," Vance said, leaning back in his leather chair. "You certainly know how to make an exit. Is this the kill shot?"

I dropped the folder on his desk. "Wire fraud, tax evasion, and a staggering amount of embezzlement. They’ve been using the hotel as collateral for three different loans simultaneously. They’re in default across the board."

Vance smiled, a terrifying, predatory grin. "Initiate the freeze. Call the SEC."

At exactly 8:05 AM, the Sterling family’s world officially collapsed. Their corporate accounts, personal checking accounts, and credit lines were frozen simultaneously by federal order.

At 10:00 AM, the glass doors to the Vanguard lobby shattered the morning quiet as Julian burst in, looking disheveled and frantic. He bypassed security and marched straight toward my glass-walled office.

"Clara!" he yelled, slamming his hands against my door before bursting in. "Do you have any idea what you've done? Our credit cards are declining! My mother’s accounts are locked! You have to fix this!"

I didn't even look up from my laptop. "I did fix it, Julian. I excised a malignant tumor from Vanguard’s portfolio. You should leave before security escorts you out."

"You vindictive...!" Julian sneered, his handsome face twisting into something ugly. "You planned this! You used me to get to my family's financial records!"

I finally looked up, meeting his enraged gaze with absolute ice. "I loved you, Julian. I was ready to marry you. But your family handed me the financial records voluntarily to prove how 'wealthy' you were. It’s not my fault you were too arrogant to realize you were handing a loaded gun to an auditor."

Two massive security guards appeared behind him, grabbing him by the arms.

"This isn't over, Clara!" he screamed as they dragged him backward. "I'll ruin you!"

I took a sip of my coffee. "You literally can't afford to."
