Chapter 5 - The Desperate Ploy

By Wednesday, the media had picked up the story. The headlines were brutal: Sterling Empire Crumbles: Billionaire Family Hit with Federal Fraud Probe.
I was working late in my apartment, reviewing the final asset seizure documents, when a frantic knock echoed through my door.
I checked the security camera. It was Julian. He was soaking wet from the rain, holding a pathetic bouquet of bodega flowers.
I hit the record button on my security system and opened the door, leaving the chain locked.
"What do you want, Julian?"
"Clara, please," he begged, his voice cracking. He pressed his face near the gap in the door. "I'm sorry. I was an idiot. I should have defended you. My parents are toxic, and I see that now. Let me come in. We can still be together. I love you."
I stared at him, feeling a wave of absolute disgust. He didn't love me. He loved the fact that I was his only lifeline to a billionaire trust fund.
"Julian," I said softly. "Are you recording this?"
He blinked, caught off guard. "What? No! Clara, I swear!"
"Because I am," I pointed to the glowing red light on my doorframe camera. "And if you ever step foot on my property again, I will file a restraining order so fast it will make your head spin."
"You owe me!" he suddenly snapped, dropping the romantic facade instantly. The flowers fell to the wet hallway floor. "You humiliated us! You ruined my life!"
May you like
"You ruined your own life, Julian. I just turned on the lights so everyone could see the rot."
I slammed the door and threw the deadbolt.
