Chapter 6 - Eleanor's Desperation

With Julian in a cell and Marcus cooperating with the DA to save his own skin, Eleanor was isolated and frantic. Her son, her golden goose, was locked away, and her own condo was facing foreclosure due to the massive legal fees she was racking up.

I knew she was going to do something stupid. I just had to wait for it.

It happened outside my favorite coffee shop on a Tuesday morning. I was walking to my armored SUV when Eleanor stepped out from between two parked cars. She looked completely unhinged—hair disheveled, designer coat stained, eyes wild.

She reached into her oversized purse. “You ruined my boy! You ruined our lives!” she screamed, pulling out a small, silver .38 caliber revolver.

People on the street screamed and scattered.

My heart rate barely spiked. In my line of work, a panicked amateur with a gun is dangerous, but predictable. She was standing too close, her arm fully extended, hands shaking violently.

Before she could pull the heavy double-action trigger, I stepped inside her guard, striking the inside of her wrist with my left forearm while my right hand clamped over the cylinder, preventing it from rotating. I twisted violently.

Eleanor shrieked as the gun was wrenched from her grip. I swept her leg, sending her crashing to the concrete. I planted my knee squarely in the center of her back, pinning her down, and ejected the bullets from the revolver onto the street.

“You’re pathetic, Eleanor,” I whispered, dialing 911 with my free hand. “But at least now you can have a family reunion in county holding.”
