Chapter 1 - The HD Reality Check

The flashing red and blue lights painted the walls of my hallway in frantic, pulsing strokes. Before Julian could fully comprehend the situation, heavy fists pounded on my reinforced mahogany front door. “Seattle PD! Open up!”

Julian’s eyes darted from the door to me, panic finally piercing his arrogant facade. He scrambled backward, clutching his twisted wrist, his mind working in overdrive. Eleanor, shaking off her initial shock, immediately began to scream. “Help! Help us! She’s crazy! She assaulted my son!”

I didn’t rush. I smoothly smoothed the lapels of my tailored suit, walked over to the smart-panel on the wall, and remotely unlocked the front door. Three officers burst in, hands hovering over their holsters. Among them was Officer Ramirez, a guy I’d worked with during my threat assessment days.

“Drop it! Hands where I can see them!” Ramirez barked, taking in the chaotic scene. The broken glass, the spilled wine, Julian gasping against the wall.

Julian immediately played the victim. He sank to his knees, tears welling in his eyes—a masterful performance. “Officers, thank God you’re here,” he choked out. “My wife… she just snapped. I asked her about a work trip, and she went into a martial arts rage. Look at my wrist! Look at what she did to the house!”

Marcus, still holding his phone, stepped forward eagerly. “I have it all on video, officers! She attacked him unprovoked!”

Ramirez looked at me, his expression neutral but his eyes questioning. I didn’t defend myself verbally. Instead, I walked over to the kitchen island, pulled out an iPad from the hidden drawer, and tapped a sequence of keys. I handed it to Ramirez.

“Officer Ramirez,” I said, my voice eerily calm against Eleanor’s theatrical sobbing. “You’ll find a synced, four-angle view of the last twenty minutes in pristine 4K resolution, complete with directional audio. It captures the property destruction, the verbal threats of physical violence, and the attempted assault on my person.”

Julian froze. “What?”

I looked down at my husband of ninety-six hours. “Did you really think the CEO of a risk management firm wouldn’t have a state-of-the-art surveillance perimeter? Your cousin’s iPhone video is going to look a little pathetic next to this.”

Ramirez watched the footage. His jaw tightened as the audio of Julian declaring a wife “must be broken” filled the silent room. He handed the tablet to his partner and pulled out his handcuffs. “Julian Vance, you are under arrest for domestic assault, destruction of property, and communicating threats.”

As they hauled Julian away, I looked at Eleanor and Marcus. “Get out of my house. Now.”
