Chapter 10 - The Gloves Stay Off

One year later.

The Seattle skyline glittered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my newly expanded corporate headquarters. My firm, Vanguard Risk Management, had doubled in size. The publicity from the trial hadn't ruined me; it had propelled me into the stratosphere.

Women who were trapped in high-net-worth abusive marriages, women who were dealing with stalkers, women who needed a tactical exit strategy—they all came to me. We were no longer just a corporate security firm; we were a lifeline for the vulnerable.

I sat at my desk, reviewing the latest quarterly reports, when my assistant buzzed in.

“Victoria, your 3:00 PM is here. A Mrs. Harrison. She’s… she looks very nervous. Said her husband tracks her phone, so we had her leave it in a Faraday bag downstairs.”

I closed my laptop and stood up. I remembered that feeling. The creeping dread, the realization that the man you married was a carefully constructed mask hiding a monster.

“Send her in,” I said.

A woman in her mid-thirties walked in, clutching her purse defensively. She had a faint bruise fading on her jawline, poorly concealed by expensive makeup. She looked at me, her eyes filled with a mixture of terror and desperate hope.

“They said you could help me,” she whispered. “My husband… he’s powerful. He says if I try to leave, he’ll destroy me. He says no one will believe me.”

I walked around my desk and poured her a glass of water. I handed it to her, my expression soft but my posture radiating absolute, unyielding strength.

“Sit down, Mrs. Harrison,” I said, looking her directly in the eye. “He thinks his power makes him untouchable. But we specialize in tearing down untouchable men.”

I pulled a fresh legal pad toward me and picked up my pen.

“Take a deep breath. You are safe here. Now, let’s take the gloves off.”
