Chapter 8 - The Final Divorce Decree

Six months later, the divorce was finalized in record time.

Without any money to pay for a decent lawyer, Ryan had to accept whatever terms my legal team presented.

He surrendered all parental rights, realizing he could not afford child support even if he wanted to pay it.

I did not want his money anyway; I only wanted him gone forever.

I signed the final papers in my father's office, using a heavy gold pen.

My lawyer handed me the stamped, official decree.

"You are officially a single woman," Mr. Sterling smiled.

Later that week, I heard through a mutual acquaintance about Ryan's current living situation.

He and Brenda had moved into a tiny, rundown apartment on the outskirts of the city.

Ryan had finally found a job, but it wasn't an executive position.

He was working the night shift at a 24-hour convenience store, wearing a polyester uniform.

Brenda spent her days watching daytime television, completely isolated from the high society friends she used to boast about.

They had built a prison of their own making.

They had traded a life of luxury and love for a week in Cancún, and they would pay the price for the rest of their lives.

I didn't feel sorry for them.

Every time I looked at my beautiful, thriving son, I knew I had made the right choice.

I had cut out the cancer before it could spread to my child.
