Chapter 7 - The Restraining Order

Ryan's arrest for grand theft was the final nail in the coffin of his pride.
My father's lawyers ensured he spent a full week in holding before Brenda could scrape together enough money for a bail bondsman.
The day he was released, I filed for a permanent, ironclad restraining order.
I stood before a judge in a quiet courtroom, detailing the emotional abuse, the abandonment, and the theft.
Ryan sat at the defendant's table, looking disheveled, exhausted, and finally broken.
He tried to speak, tried to apologize, but the judge quickly silenced him.
"Mr. Davis, your behavior is abhorrent," the judge stated, glaring down from the bench.
"You abandoned a medically vulnerable infant and a recovering mother for a beach vacation."
The judge slammed the gavel down.
"I am granting a permanent order of protection. You are to remain five hundred feet away from the petitioner, her child, her residence, and her place of business."
"If you violate this order, you will return to jail."
Ryan slumped in his chair, putting his head in his hands.
Brenda, sitting in the gallery, began to sob loudly.
I walked out of the courtroom feeling a massive weight lift off my shoulders.
The air felt cleaner, and the future finally looked bright.
I drove home to the estate, where my father was playing with a healthy, giggling Leo in the garden.

The toxic chapter of my life was officially closed.
I was no longer a victim; I was a protector.
