Chapter 3 - The Fortress of the Law

The police intervention was swift, clinical, and completely immune to Julian’s attempted charm. As two officers immediately restrained Julian against the living room wall to pat him down, a female officer named Sergeant Miller rushed to my side, her medical flashlight quickly scanning the unnatural, swollen angle of my left wrist and the dark bruising forming along my jawline.
"Ma'am, I'm Sergeant Miller. We have an ambulance pulling into the driveway right now," she said gently, wrapping a sterile support splint around my forearm to stabilize the fracture. "Is the child secure?"
"He's in the master bathroom, locked inside," I said, wincing as the cold air hit my split lip. "He has his grandfather on the tablet. He won't open it for anyone except me or my father."
"I'll handle the perimeter," Sergeant Miller said, signaling to a tactical officer to clear the upstairs while she helped me to my feet.
Across the room, Julian was attempting to deploy the smooth, aristocratic persona he used at country club dinners, his hands cuffed securely behind his back. "Officer, listen to reason," he pleaded, putting on a calm, reasonable tone that made my stomach turn. "My wife has been suffering from severe paranoid delusions. She slipped on the runner rug while carrying laundry. My mother and I were merely trying to assist her to the couch when she became hysterical—"
"Save it for the magistrate, Mr. Montgomery," the arresting officer interrupted coldly, tightening the steel cuffs until Julian winced. "We have a real-time, timestamped video recording from the child's device showing you aggressively attempting to breach a secure room while the victim was bleeding on the floor. You're being placed under arrest for Felony Domestic Battery, Assault with Intent to Cause Grievous Bodily Harm, and Child Endangerment."
"Child endangerment?! I didn't touch my son!" Julian shouted, his composed mask shattering completely as they began to guide him toward the door.
"You committed a violent felony in the immediate presence of a minor, causing severe psychological trauma," Sergeant Miller snapped from beside me. She turned her gaze to Eleanor, who was trying to slip quietly toward the kitchen exit with her designer purse clutched to her chest. "Hold it right there, ma'am. You aren't going anywhere."
"I am a guest in this house!" Eleanor protested shrilly, her face flushing a deep, angry magenta. "I had no physical involvement in this altercation! You cannot detain me without cause!"
"You stood over an injured victim, obstructed medical assistance, and actively attempted to flee the scene," Sergeant Miller replied, gesturing for a secondary patrol officer to take Eleanor by the arm. "You're being transported to the precinct for formal questioning as an accessory after the fact. Take them both out."
As they paraded my husband and my mother-in-law out into the flashing strobe lights of the driveway in front of the gathering neighborhood crowd, the master bathroom door finally clicked open. Little Leo stepped out timidly, still clutching the tablet to his chest. On the screen, my father’s face was etched with deep, protective relief.

"Mommy!" Leo cried out, running across the tiles and wrapping his arms carefully around my uninjured waist.
"You did it, my brave little dinosaur," I whispered into his hair, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes as the paramedics wheeled the gurney into the hallway. "You saved us. We're never going to be scared in this house again."
