Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

Mark flinched at the sound of my voice. “Elena, you don’t understand! The Volkovs were going to kill us all! This was the only way to save myself! I had to make a choice!”

“And you chose to sacrifice us,” I said, my voice echoing like the wrath of God over the speakers.

“Where is the flash drive, Elena?!” Mark screamed, his polished facade completely breaking down into cowardly hysteria. “Give it to me, and I’ll give you a cut! You can take Mia and disappear!”

Beside him, the hitman raised his gun, pointing it directly at the back of Mark’s head.

“What are you doing?” Mark stammered, freezing.

“No loose ends,” the hitman growled. “You’re a liability, Mark. The boss wants you gone, too. We take the insurance money, and you take a swim.”

Mark fell to his knees, sobbing, begging for his life. The man who had callously orchestrated my murder was crying over his designer shoes.

“Take the shot,” Arthur ordered into his headset.

Before the hitman could pull the trigger on Mark, three sniper rounds hit the pavement at his feet. Floodlights suddenly blazed to life, blinding the men.

“State Police! Drop the weapon!”
