Chapter 10 - The New Dawn

One Year Later.
The sun was a brilliant, warm gold as it set over the turquoise waters of the Florida Keys. The salty breeze blew through the open windows of our little beachfront cottage. The kitchen smelled like cinnamon, but this time, it wasn't masked by the harsh scent of bleach.
I stood by the counter, chopping fresh fruit. The heavy weight of survival that used to sit on my chest had completely dissolved.
The back door flew open, and Mia ran in, her bare feet covered in warm sand. She was laughing—a bright, beautiful, unburdened sound. She held up a massive, perfect seashell.
“Look, Mama! David helped me find it!”
David walked in behind her, carrying a surfboard and smiling. He had relocated to the coast with us, becoming the uncle and protector Mia deserved. The offshore account had provided us with more than enough to start over, under new names, in a place where the winters couldn't touch us.
“It’s beautiful, sweetie,” I smiled, kissing the top of her head.
Mia wrapped her arms around my waist, squeezing tight. “I love our new house, Mama.”

I looked out the window at the vast, endless ocean, feeling the solid, undeniable reality of our safety. We hadn't just survived the fire; we had risen from the ashes, entirely unbreakable.
“Me too, Mia,” I whispered, holding my daughter close. “Me too.”
