Chapter 7 - The Trap is Set

Two days later, Mark thought he was a grieving widower. He was scheduled to meet the insurance adjusters on a Wednesday.

Instead, his encrypted burner phone buzzed with a text message from an unknown number.

I know what you did. Meet me at the abandoned shipyard on Pier 4 at midnight. Come alone, or I send the files to the FBI.

Attached was a photo of Mia, holding today’s newspaper, standing in front of a brick wall.

Arthur had orchestrated it perfectly. The shipyard was a labyrinth of rust and shadows, completely cut off from the public. Snipers from the State Police were positioned on the cranes. Arthur, David, and I were in a fortified mobile command center a mile away.

Through the security feeds, we watched Mark’s sleek Mercedes pull up to Pier 4. He stepped out, looking nervous, checking his expensive watch.

He wasn't alone.

A black van pulled up behind him, and the man with the gravelly voice stepped out, holding a suppressed weapon. Mark had brought the hitman.

“Elena!” Mark called out into the darkness, his voice echoing off the metal containers. “Come out, sweetheart! Let’s talk about this! We can fix it!”

In the command center, I grabbed the radio mic. My voice boomed over the shipyard's PA system.

“You tried to burn your own daughter alive, Mark.”
