Chapter 4 - The Digital Ghost

Leaving Mia locked safely in the cabin with David, I took his keys and drove the gray sedan into a small, unnamed mountain town. I wore a baseball cap and dark sunglasses, keeping my head down as I walked into a pawn shop. I bought a used laptop with cash I found in David's glovebox and connected to the public Wi-Fi outside a diner.
My hands flew across the keyboard. Mark was arrogant. He used the same base password for everything: MiaBear2019. It used to make me smile. Now it made me sick.
I hacked into his primary email. I found the hidden folders. E-tickets to a non-extradition country. Offshore wire transfers. And worst of all, an email thread with an encrypted address detailing the "demolition job" at our house.
I downloaded everything to a flash drive. But as I sat in the car, a notification popped up on the screen.

My blood ran cold. Mark had installed a hidden tracking software on the laptop's base operating system when he set up our home network years ago.
I slammed the laptop shut and threw it in a nearby dumpster, peeling out of the parking lot. I had the flash drive, but they knew what town I was in. The clock was ticking.
