Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Chaos erupted. Board members shouted, demanding answers. Arthur clutched his chest, gasping for air as his legacy evaporated in real-time.
Julian, realizing his life was over, completely lost his mind.
He lunged across the table, grabbing a heavy glass water pitcher, and hurled it directly at Elias. Elias ducked, the pitcher shattering against the glass wall. Before security could react, Julian vaulted over the chairs, pulling a small, illegal concealed firearm from his ankle holster.
He didn't aim at Elias. He grabbed me, pressing the cold barrel of the gun directly to my temple.
"Nobody move!" Julian shrieked, backing toward the door, dragging me with him. "I'll kill her! I swear to God I'll blow her brains out!"
The room froze. Elias stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes wide with genuine panic for the first time.
"Julian, drop the gun," Elias said, his voice a low, terrifying register. "You walk out that door with her, and I will hunt you to the ends of the earth."
"I'm already dead!" Julian laughed hysterically. "You took everything! You think I care about her? She's the reason we're ruined!"
"You ruined yourself, Julian," I said, my voice shockingly steady. I could feel his hand shaking violently against my head. He was a coward. He always had been.
"Shut up!" he screamed.
He made the mistake of looking at Elias for a fraction of a second to check his distance.
In that microsecond, I slammed my stiletto heel down with all my strength, directly onto Julian’s instep. He howled in pain, his grip loosening just enough. I threw my elbow back, catching him squarely in the broken nose Elias had given him the night before.
Julian dropped the gun, clutching his face.
Elias closed the distance in a blur. He tackled Julian to the floor, his fist connecting with Julian’s jaw with a sickening crunch. Julian went limp instantly.
Elias stood up, breathing heavily, and immediately pulled me into his chest, burying his face in my hair. "Are you okay? Clara, are you hurt?"
"I'm fine," I breathed, wrapping my arms around him tightly.
The wail of police sirens drifted up from the streets below.

"The SEC and the FBI have been reviewing the drives since midnight," Elias announced to the stunned room, holding me close. "They are downstairs right now."
Arthur sat frozen in his chair, sobbing quietly into his hands. His empire was dead. His son was unconscious on the floor. And his daughter was walking away with the man who had orchestrated it all.
