Chapter 5 - The Gala of Glass

Despite the corporate apocalypse unfolding behind closed doors, my parents insisted on keeping up appearances. That Friday was the Beaumont Society’s annual charity gala, a glittering event where the elite of New York gathered to measure each other's worth.

Elias donned the Silas Thorne mask. I wore a backless emerald gown that clung to my curves. As we entered the ballroom, arm-in-arm, the whispers started. I was the tragic beauty; he was the crypt keeper with a platinum card.

My mother rushed over to us, her smile strained, her eyes frantic. "Silas! Clara! So glad you could make it. Silas, Arthur was hoping to have a private word with you in the cigar lounge."

"Of course, Beatrice," Silas wheezed, tapping his cane. "Lead the way."

In the dimly lit lounge, Arthur and Julian were pacing like caged animals. When we entered, Julian locked the door behind us.

"Silas, we have a slight liquidity crisis," Arthur began, sweating through his tuxedo. "A temporary hold on our accounts. We need an immediate advance on the fifteen million."

"An advance?" Silas coughed into his handkerchief. "Arthur, my boy, I bought you out of bankruptcy. I did not agree to fund your mismanagement. My auditors tell me your company is hemorrhaging cash."

Julian snapped. He stepped forward, grabbing Silas by the lapels of his suit, lifting the "old man" slightly.

"Listen to me, you decrepit bastard," Julian snarled, spittle flying from his lips. "You're going to sign the release forms right now, or I'll make sure you don't live to see your next birthday."

My heart hammered in my throat. I knew Elias could snap Julian’s neck in two seconds, but a physical fight would ruin the disguise and the plan.

"Julian, stop!" I screamed, stepping forward and shoving my brother hard in the chest. "Take your hands off my husband!"

Julian laughed, a bitter, unhinged sound. "Protecting your meal ticket, Clara? Step aside."

"No," Silas rasped, his voice suddenly dropping its brittle edge, taking on a fraction of Elias’s true, terrifying bass. "Let the boy speak, Clara. Let him show us exactly who he is."

Julian froze, confused by the sudden shift in the old man's tone, the sheer predatory stillness of his posture.

"I've recorded this entire conversation," Silas tapped the ruby tie pin on his lapel. "Extortion. Physical assault. If my funds are not secure, Arthur, I will trigger the default clause on our marriage contract. I will seize everything by Monday morning."

Arthur pulled Julian back, his face ashen. "Silas, please, he's just stressed. We'll find the money. Just... give us the weekend."

Silas adjusted his suit with agonizing slowness. "You have until Monday, Arthur. Not a minute longer."
