Chapter 1 - The Devil’s Bargain

The silence in the bridal suite was absolute, broken only by the crackle of the hearth and the ragged sound of Elias Vance exhaling. He stared at me, his sharp green eyes tracing the lines of my face as if searching for a lie. He found none.
"You kept the drives," Elias repeated, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that sent an involuntary shiver down my spine. "Julian told you to destroy the evidence of the shell corporations, and you defied him."
"Julian is a fool who thinks I am entirely made of glass," I replied, my voice steadying. I walked over to the heavy mahogany wardrobe, my silk gown rustling like dry leaves. "He gave me the drives to incinerate three days ago when the SEC sent their first inquiry. He was too drunk to watch me do it."
I reached into the hidden lining of my overnight valise and pulled out a small, velvet jewelry pouch. I tossed it onto the bed, right over the marriage contract. Two black, encrypted solid-state drives spilled out.
Elias slowly approached the bed. He didn't look at the drives; he looked at me. The cold, ancient exhaustion in his eyes shifted into something sharper, something entirely predatory. "If you give these to me, Clara, you understand what happens? Your father goes to federal prison. Your brother will likely face decades for the forged manifests and embezzlement. Your family name will be ground into the dirt."
"My family name is already dirt," I said, lifting my chin. "They sold me to a seventy-five-year-old man to maintain their country club memberships. They stole your father's life, and they stole my future. Burn them to the ground, Elias. I will hand you the matches."
A slow, wicked smile spread across Elias’s face, transforming him from a terrifying specter of vengeance into something breathtakingly handsome. He reached out, his bare, calloused fingers brushing the side of my neck where the sapphire choker had left a faint red mark.
"I thought I was buying a pawn," he murmured, his thumb grazing my jawline. "It seems I accidentally married a queen."
"Don't flatter me," I stepped back, though my skin burned where he touched me. "This is a transaction. You want your family's legacy back, and you want Arthur and Julian to bleed. I want my freedom, and a cut of the assets once you liquidate the holdings. I know the shipping routes. I know the port authorities they bribed. You need me."
Elias picked up the drives, slipping them into the pocket of his tailored trousers. "Very well, Mrs. Vance. Or should I call you Mrs. Thorne? Tomorrow morning, we have a post-wedding brunch with your delightful family. You will smile. You will play the obedient, terrified bride of a frail billionaire. And behind their backs, we will dismantle their empire piece by piece."

"Deal," I whispered.
He offered me his hand. We shook on the destruction of my family, sealing the devil's bargain in the glow of the dying fire.
