Chapter 9 - The Fallout

The fallout was swift and brutal.

With the physical evidence recovered and David’s recorded confession securely logged into evidence, the authorities moved aggressively.

The financial crimes division froze every single one of David's assets before dawn.

His shell companies in the Cayman Islands and Belize were dismantled by federal investigators.

My parents and sister were formally charged in Hawaii and extradited back to the mainland.

I sat in the front row of the courtroom during their arraignment.

My mother refused to look at me, her face pale and drawn.

My father stared straight ahead, completely broken by the realization that his golden retirement was gone.

Sarah sobbed loudly throughout the entire proceeding, begging the judge for leniency because she was a mother.

The judge was unmoved by her tears.

Because of Sarah’s direct involvement in corporate fraud and child endangerment, she was denied bail.

Social services immediately contacted me regarding the custody of Ava and my nephew, Tyler.

Tyler had been flown back from Hawaii under the care of a social worker.

I didn't hesitate for a single second.

I signed the emergency foster placement papers, bringing both of my sister’s children into my home.

David was facing decades in federal prison for wire fraud, kidnapping, and money laundering.

His high-priced lawyers abandoned him the moment his bank accounts were frozen.

The divorce settlement went entirely in my favor.

The judge awarded me full custody of Lucy, the house, and a massive punitive financial settlement from David's seized domestic accounts.

I walked out of the courthouse that afternoon feeling the sun warm my face.

The heavy, suffocating cloud that had hung over my life for the past year was finally gone.

I was free.
